Tagged - again!

And this time, I am supposed to be writing down 5 random facts about myself.

Hmm.. lets see.

I prefer wearing glasses to wearing contact lenses (I would rather not wear the glasses either, but lets not begin on that.. :P).

I can stare at the night sky for hours, without tiring of it.

Everytime I write something, it ends up being funny.

I miss studying and writing exams (not bluffing [solemn face]).

I think I am terrible at writing random facts..

:P

Road hogs..

There seems to be a law which goes thus:

If you are the driver of anything slightly bigger than the average tri-cycle, you are provided with the rights to run over fellow human beings who happen to cross your path and treat the road much like a kid would treat a playground.

Humph!

Finally, I have more than 5 comments on the same post!

Happiness prevails. Thanks, M!

Circling around..

A teammate of mine (Ms. P) is leaving her job to go and study business at Manchester. So I asked another teammate (Ms. M) to think of an appropriate gift that will remind her of the times here and other things of the sort that gifts are supposed to remind people of.

10 minutes after I had asked her to think, she tells me to "come up with an idea for the gift". I asked her why she was asking me to do

a). something I am pathetic at,
b). the very thing I had asked her to do 10 minutes ago.

She said, "That, my friend, is called circular thought". I called it "too-lazy-to-think" thought.

We are still going around in circles. Perhaps, Ms. P will have to do without the gift, in which case both of us also will not be given gifts when we leave.

For, 'What you do, comes back to you'. :P

17 Pink Shirts.

There seems to be a sudden rise in the number of men wearing pink shirts these days. I thought pink was the all-time woman-ish colour. I mentioned this to my sister who did the following:

1. Stared at me like I had an extra nose.
2. Rolled on the floor, laughing for 7 minutes and some seconds.
3. Told me that after Saif Ali Khan wore pink in Kal ho na ho (and got labeled 'hot'), the "happening" male set of the country has taken it upon itself to do a Khan and get labeled in a similar manner.
4. Also told me (in terms that I shall not list here), exactly how "uncool" and behind the times I was.

NB: With reference to number3., please note that creatures that I noticed wearing pink were nowhere even in the vicinity of "happening". Of course, it may also be that my definition of "happening" is very very different.

I must mention here, that when I say pink, I am not refering to the mild, un-obscene pink that is perhaps, acceptable once in a while. What I am refering to is the shade that is pinnnnnnnnnk, or PINK, if you prefer that. Loud, damaging to the eye, obscene...

I always imagined that my taste in colours is decent. Colours that please the eye (primarily mine), you know. Blue, grey, blue-grey, grey-blue and things of that sort. And everytime I happen to mention this at home, the only person who supports me is my father. (hi five!)

The only other person who shares my taste in colour (or so I like to believe), is my 3-year old neighbour. I think this, because everytime she sees someone wearing an unacceptable colour, she resolutely looks away from the offender and refuses to speak (I like to believe that the reason for this particular behaviour is the colour of the shirt, even though I have seen it happen only twice and both times, the offenders were not men).

I counted 17 pink shirts on my way to work today, 8 of which fell into the highly objectionable PINK category.

What is the world coming to??

Why...

..do people seem in such a hurry in the mornings, that they dont hesitate to run over you in the haste?

.. do people ride bikes on the footpath (!!) and actually have the guts to honk at you and ask you to move out of the way?

..is that sentiment also called kindness-to-fellow-human-beings missing (I refer to people teating your feet like a doormat in a moderately crowded bus..) ?

..are we expected to sit in office the entire day, while certain others (Ahem!) are allowed to come and go as they please?

.. is writing such a task these days?

.. am I not able to read more than 3 pages at a time these days without dozing off?

.. does it feel like the last weekend was a couple of months ago?

.. does every person beyond the age of 40, remotely related to me (and otherwise), ask when I plan to get married?

Sigh!

Rain..

It is raining. There is a pleasant breeze along with the rain which sprays the water gently on one's face. Everything looks clean and nice. I think it is a beautiful day. If I were poetic, I would have gone a step further and written of the trees swaying and the world seeming more cheerful. But then, I dont really fall into the vicinity of poetic, as described here; and hence I shall be my old prosaic self.

Anyway, the point being, that it is such a beautiful day, and I have been confined to a small (read miniscule) space with a machine, whose only advantage is that it lets me blog.

Tyranny, I think, is the word I should be employing.

There is this saying about all sorts making worlds. This morning I came in contact with, what I thought was a highly amusing one. I would have used 'most amusing', but then that category I reserve for my sister; and she is the only one of her sort around (thank Heavens!).

Coming back to the highly amusing one. I must note here, that at this particular point in time, it had only begun raining. More like a light drizzle, the skies were rumbling, though. The kind of drizzle which a lot of people tend to even ignore. On such a morning, one does expect to see a sparse crowd, owing to the imminent rain. But what one does not expect to see, is a regular acquaintance bundled up in several layers of clothing and a raincoat, carrying an umbrella which seems more like a stolen temple dome.

Clothes perhaps, do not make a man; but they do alter the appearance to a large extent. I was quite startled when this bundle of clothing came up to me and said "Hullo!". On expressing curiosity over the attire, she simply said, "Oh, that. Rain water is bad for my skin, you see." and she went on about how her beautician had asked her to stay away from rain water and about 10 other things that escape my memory right now. The best part being where the beautician had asked her to stay away from chemicals and 'enjoy natural beauty'.

What can I say? All sorts do make a world, after all. :)

By Providence divine...

.. is how I am getting through the day.

Some days are just inexplicably irritating. One feels like throwing things just for the sake of it. Beyond this state of annoyance, is a state where the throwing of things is accompanied with the losing of temper and screaming at anyone in the vicinity. And then, is the state that I am currently in.

Well, I guess what triggered it all off was the elevator in my building. Normally, elevators are polite things. They arrive when you call, take you to the desired altitude and once the destination has arrived, they wait politely till you get off and bid farewell. Now, when it comes to the pre-historic contraption in my apartment, things are rather different. It answers your call, alright, takes you to the desired floor, and then... just when you are about to open the door and get out, it suddenly journeys back to the first floor. Apparently, this behaviour has been noticed frequently for some time now (like the watchman's wife described to me in about 30 minutes).

As a result of the 30 minute conversation, I had to chase after my bus before the driver caught sight of me and decided to wait.

After the usual 40 minute expedition, I get off to find the road so full of vehicles that some cycle-wallas were actually riding on the 4 inch wide strech of rubble that they call a footpath. And, I'd rather not write of how I actually managed to cross..

And then.. I discover that there is a mountainload of work waiting for me (ta! da!!).

Then, why, am I typing this post out when I should be working? You see, gentle reader, sometimes after so much hassle, the mind refuses to work. Mine just did. And it did not plain refuse. Putting the foot down, is the phrase that I am looking for.

But then, there is a silver lining... It is a Friday. Yay! :)

Dream..

I dreamt last night of Dumbledore training me, a colleague and a labrador, on scoring resumes. We were all dressed in robes and wizard/witch hats (including the dog)..

Too much training? Or is it too much of Harry Potter?

I am a tagged human..

Alright. So the investigation did turn out to be fruitful (Thank you Yasaswini, my friend!), and I finally have the time to fulfill my responsibilities as a tagged human.. :P

So, here goes..

1. Pick out a scar you have, and explain how you got it:
There is one on my chin (no Yasaswini, I am not copying the answers.. :P). Got it at the age of 5 when I ran into the hall with wet feet. Slippery floor + wet feet + running at top speed + strategically placed dressing table = crash!!! + scar on chin.

2. What is on the walls in your room?
A whole load of water leakage stains. My sister is trying to build a collage to hide it.

3. What does your phone look like.
A very battered little gadget. Been there, done that, you know..

4. What music do you listen to?
Old hindi film music, semi-classical instrumental music. Basically, anything that pleases the ear (Baje sargam...).

5. What is your current desktop picture?
Stormy Skies (National Geographic)

6. What do you want more than anything right now?
A two month long paid vacation.. (I am such a dreamer..)

7. Do you believe in gay marriage?
How does it matter??

8. What time were you born?
7:17 PM

9. Are your parents still together?
Yes. Very much. We just celebrated their 25th anniversary. They do squabble over the remote sometimes, though..

10. What are you listening to?
My computer making strange noises.

12. The last person to make you cry?
Erm.. I'd rather skip this.

13. What is your favourite perfume/cologne?
Nothing specific.

14. What kind of hair/eye colour do you like on the opposite sex?
Black/Black

15. Do you like pain killers?
What sort of a question is that? How can anyone like pain killers??

16. Are you too shy to ask someone out?
Yes. (Furious blushing) :D

17. Fave pizza topping?
Tonnes of cheese.

18. If you could eat anything right now, what would it be?
Scrambled eggs.

19. Who was the last person you made mad?
I dont make people mad. I am a nice, simple girl (or so I like to believe). :P

20. Is anyone in love with you?
Sheesh.. I am blushing again. :P. Honestly, will people actually fill in names?

Done!

Now i need to figure out how to tag other people...

I am supposed to have been tagged, and I have no idea what to do now... Investigations begin. :P

Umm..

It is supposed to be 'Summer Day' in my team. A fact that was sitting somewhere in the back of my mind, and seems to have been overpowered by more dominant thoughts like 'Get-out-of-bed', 'chase-bus', 'avoid-getting-killed-while-crossing-roads', and so on.

Well, that apart, the fact of the matter is that I forgot 'Summer day' and am dressed in my usual jeans and kurta. And I assume that I am going to be asked the reason for my attire by people. And those who are too disgusted to even ask for a reason will perhaps, just glare and walk by.

When the mail announcing 'Summer day' arrived, it told me to "be dressed in capris, shorts or skirts" and to "beat the heat". It also pleaded "No salwars please" (with about 5 exclamation marks following the 'please').

In a way, I think it is good that I forgot; for the following reasons:

1. I do not have any of the mentioned summer clothes that can be worn anywhere except at home; or at the most, to the garden for fiddling around with mud.

2. By no stretch of imagination (or the clothes themselves!) will I fit into any of my sister's 'summery' clothes.

3. Imagine me wearing any of those and travelling in the bus. The very thought has me in gales of laughter.

4. For all my supposed intelligence, I fail to understand, exactly what sort of heat am I supposed to be beating in an office which is centrally air-conditioned; and has me freezing half the time.

And since there is no better way to end this without bringing my weight into the discussion, this is where I shall stop.

Looks like they reached a compromise. I saw the tired cockroach slinking away from within the 'Enter' key when colleague went to drink water.

All is peaceful again..
We discovered that my colleague's keyboard has a new resident in the form of a small cockroach. Spent the past twenty minutes trying to persuade the insect to come out of its current place of residence. It just kept crawling all over the keyboard, and at one point when our efforts became slightly too violent; it went and hid in the hollow part of the 'Enter' key.

Tried almost everything (barring fumigation). Shook keyboard upside down; jabbed at the insect with pen; hit the 'Enter' key repeatedly.. to no avail.

My colleague is still jabbing away at her keyboard. Lets see who wins..

Cant seem to concentrate on work. Sigh!
The previous evening:

Finished work comparatively early - Yay!!
Got wet in the rain.
Had pizza for dinner.
Was told of an imminent gold medal in the convocation ceremony.

A fine evening.. as fine as they make it.. :)

A teammate called me "Dude" in the morning. Is that not the masculine gender? I wonder what the feminine would be.. dudette, perhaps..

Sleepless night....

.....for no evident reason.

Last night, try as I might (no poetry intended), I just could not sleep. It is a very very rare and strange occurrence. I am usually quite a deep sleeper. Infact, my sister (until recently), claimed that "Any deeper, and you will probably hibernate!!". I assure you, that is an exaggeration. I do not sleep that deeply (I can still hear her chuckle in the background).

Well, as a result of the rare occurrence, I am now sitting at work without an inkling of what I am upto. I have not the faintest idea of what I am doing at work. It is a marvel, I actually crossed the road this morning without being hit.

Tried all known methods of banishing sleep. Drank as much coffee as I could manage without feeling like a coffee vending machine myself. Washed my face approximately 20 times in the past 7 hours. Listened to loud music till my ears started squirming in protest. Nothing works.. nothing at all. :(

Alright, I have been wanting to do this..
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phew!

Will go and see if there is any tape around. Eyelids are threatening me again.
Zzz....

Weekend is here... sooner this time!

I love it when weekends come in rather quick succession like this. This week had only 3 days!

Account of week by the day:

Monday: Yaaawn! Home - Bus stop - chase bus - cross road - reach office - work - yawn and strech in intervals - work some more - realise it is 7PM (Yikes!!) - bus stop - home - eat - sleep.

Tuesday: Pretty much the same as monday except that at 11 PM, I get a message telling me of an unexpected holiday tomorrow. Whoop with joy - scare sister out of her sleep - read a book - sleep.

Wednesday: Wake up - realise it is a holiday - whoop again (sleepily this time) - go back to bed - wake up - read - eat - read - sleep...

Thursday: Wake up with big sigh - tell self to be patient - follow routine as on monday - feel elated as work nears an end - Yay!!

It has been perhaps, one of the best weeks in the past year or so. Hope the weekend is as nice. :)

Punctus Interrogativus..

I did it! I did it!!

I finished my new book. Eats, Shoots and Leaves (Lynne Truss). Quite an interesting read it turned out to be. I can now proudly gloat as I ask people, what the question mark was called early-on?? (Heh! Heh!) Punctus Interrogativus.

That term is not a figment of my imagination. It is quite true.

The book tells you quite a lot of interesting punctuation origins and other facts of interest like the 'o' in a name like John O' Gaunt, means 'Grandson of'. It also cites hilarious examples of mis-punctuated sentences that convey a meaning that was not intended in the least. It urges the reader to be armed with the punctuation- repair kit (correction ink, spare commas, stops, exclamation marks and the like), and put it to use the minute you see a sign like "Potato's for sale".

Well, I doubt if I will ever turn into a punctuation stickler and climb ladders to correct a stray apostrophe; but it does feel nice to read about little known things like the Punctus Interrogativus and the lady who hated all punctuation marks (Gertrude Stein).

And the fact that I finally finished a book in 2 days.. elation. Pure ecstasy.. :P
